General Information on Marriage and Family Therapy

The District of Columbia Department of Health Professional Licensing Administration announces the formation of the Board of Marriage and Family Therapy. This board will license and regulate Marriage and Family Therapists in the District of Columbia.

The District of Columbia Board of Marriage and Family Therapy has the following updates:
  1. The regulations were recently completed and have been published in the DC Register.
  2. The Board plans to begin accepting applications on November 1, 2005. Applications will be available online, on this website, at that time, or through the Department of Health Professional Licensing Administration.
  3. Based upon the statute, health professionals who currently advertise as Marriage and Family Therapists and do not meet the educational or experiential requirements as outlined in Title 3, may continue to do so until March 31, 2006. After that date, health professionals are precluded from advertising or presenting themselves as such if they lack licensure in DC.
  4. A summary of the proposed educational and experiential requirements is available
  5. A summary of the proposed continuing education requirements is available
  6. If you are applying for licensure and currently hold an unrestricted MFT license in another jurisdiction, please submit an application for Licensure by Endorsement (on or after November 15, 2005). The Board will consider these applications on a case-by-case basis.

Should you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact Health Professional Licensing Administration Board of Marriage and Family Therapy at (202)724-4900.
